The Festival of Colors

Covering a festival is a huge task and who better to photograph the colors of Holi than “The Big Picture” from Boston.com. Last Wednesday (March 11th), people in India and other countries with large Hindu populations celebrated Holi, the Festival of Colors. Holi is celebrated as a welcoming of Spring, and a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. What that translates to in action is an enthusiastic dropping of inhibitions, as people chase each other and playfully splash colorful paint, powder and water on each other. People also attend bonfires to commemorate the story of Prahlada, a Hindu figure and devout follower of Lord Vishnu who prevailed over his father and the demoness Holika with the power of his devotion. Collected here are photos from this year’s Festival of Colors. (27 photos total)

15 Beautiful Microscopic Images from inside the Human Body

Get up close and personal with your innards with these 15 amazing 3D-body shots. Almost all of the following images were captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a type of electron microscope that uses a beam of high-energy electrons to scan surfaces of images. The electron beam of the SEM interacts with atoms near or at the surface of the sample to be viewed, resulting in a very high-resolution, 3D-image. Magnification levels range from x 25 (about the same as a hand lens) to about x 250,000. Incredible details of 1 to 5 nm in size can be detected.

Here you’ll experience the power of SEM in a journey of self-discovery that starts in your head, travels down through the chest and ends in the bowels of the abdomen. Along the way, you’ll see what’s normal, what happens when cells are twisted by cancer and what it looks like when an egg meets sperm for the first time. You’ll never see yourself the same way again.

Sachin Tendulkar becomes a God

While Madame Tussauds in London is preparing to unveil the wax statue of Sachin Tendulkar, at Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi the master blaster attains the status of a demigod on silk. Jaipur-based artists have dressed him not in the blue India tee, but as Hanuman, with an MRF bat in hand.

“Sachin is the new Hanuman for some,” says Gautam Bhatia. The architect did not paint the oil on silk, but was involved in its conceptualisation, as he spent hours with traditional artists who gave Tendulkar the mythological avatar.

Sachin Tendulkar is god to billion Indians but he is a “gracious god” who lifts his people out of the pit of despair in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks, a leading British newspaper said, paying tribute to the champion batsman who has “not a scrap of ego”.

Tendulkar offered balm to a country which was devastated by terror attacks in its finacial capital yet he remained a modest god, according to a write-up in Daily Telegraph.
